Blue Card in Germany: Can Parents and Parents-in-Law Join You?

Since March 1, 2024, a significant new development has opened up for EU Blue Card holders: they can now bring their parents and parents-in-law to Germany. However, this regulation only applies if the Blue Card was issued for the first time from this date onwards and the livelihood of the joining parents can be independently secured.

What Requirements Must Be Met?

Three essential conditions must be fulfilled for parent reunification: First, the Blue Card must have been issued for the first time from March 1, 2024 onwards. Second, proof is required that the parents’ livelihood is fully secured – meaning sufficient financial resources without recourse to public benefits. Third, all relevant documents must be submitted, including the application form, proof of secured livelihood, valid passports, and health insurance.

How Does the Application Process Work?

The application is generally submitted at the German diplomatic mission in the parents’ country of origin – that is, at the responsible embassy or consulate. An exception applies to nationals of certain countries with visa-free entry. After successful visa issuance, the parents can enter Germany and apply for a residence permit here. This regulation is provisionally limited until the end of 2028.

Important Additional Information

The regulation covers not only biological parents but also parents-in-law – provided the spouse lives permanently with the Blue Card holder in Germany. Furthermore, families benefit from additional facilitations: for spouses and minor children, for example, proof of adequate housing is not required.

This legislative innovation represents a significant improvement for family reunification of highly qualified professionals and is considered one of the most attractive offers in European comparison.
